Mr Liquor’s Dirty Italian Disco, Merivale’s American-style Italian eatery in the drive-in bottle shop of the Tennyson Hotel, is now in its final weeks. The revered pop-up collaboration between Merivale and Pinbone’s Mike Eggert and Jemma Whiteman will shut its roller doors on Sunday 29 April, following a disco-charged, warehouse-style closing party. Tickets to the party on sale now from www.merivale.com.au
Launching in October 2017, Mr Liquor’s playful and flavour-packed menu of bruschetta, pasta and wood-roasted meats quickly won the hearts and tastebuds of Sydney. Inspired by the red sauce joints’ of New York, Eggert and Whiteman’s signature twists and techniques have brought new life to simple, rustic dishes. The duo was led by a vision to execute food at a high, but completely unpretentious level. “We just want people walking away having had great food and an awesome night. Super casual, super crazy”, says Eggert.
For the final weeks, they’ve introduced new dishes to their classic trio repertoire of bread/pasta, cheese and meat. Think ‘beef tongue with porcini and tomato’ or ‘tuna crudo with radish and beetroot’ to start, followed by ‘bruschetta topped with ricotta, nectarine, tomato and basil’ or ‘pumpkin, lardo, pecorino and chilli’. Pastas such as the ‘fettucine with tomato butter’ or ‘gnochetti with braised lamb and rosemary’, sit alongside grilled meats like ‘porchetta with roasted pineapple’ and ‘1kg rib eye with mustard and parmesan’. The duo has also been experimenting with different pasta shapes, with the successful results making their way onto a ‘secret’ menu for those that know to ask.
Keeping in theme with the original bottle shop experience, Mr Liquor’s Dirty Italian Disco has seen guests select their own alcohol from the walk-in fridge, before ordering at the counter and dining in the 90-seater drive-way eatery. Merivale’s Master Sommelier, Franck Moreau curated the selection of over 150 wines, served alongside classic aperitifs, seasonal cocktails and homemade cellos.
To send-off the pop-up with a disco-charged bang, Mr Liquor’s Dirty Italian Disco is hosting an epic closing party on Sunday 29th April. Kicking off at 1pm through to 6pm, the event will feature party-snacks like porchetta rolls and chicken wings, wine tastings, roving cocktails and DJs all afternoon. Tickets are $40 from https://events.ticketbooth.com.au/event/mr-liquors-dirty-italian-disco-closing-party
The Tennyson drive-way will reopen with another pop-up concept later in the year. Further details will be announced in due course.
